AC Repair & Installation in New Jersey
Your air conditioner picks the worst possible moment to quit. First real heat wave of the summer, usually a Saturday, usually right when the house is full.
Fast Lane Plumbing & HVAC handles cooling work in Somerville and the towns around it. Repairs, central air installation, full system replacement, and the maintenance that keeps you from needing the first two. We’re bonded and insured, we figure out what’s wrong before we quote a price, and somebody picks up the phone at two in the morning.
Over 20 years of plumbing and heating work stands behind every job. We are fully bonded and insured, and we hold New Jersey Plumbing License #13646. Call (908) 300-8183 to speak with our team about a repair, a replacement quote, or a no-hot-water emergency.
Air Conditioning Repair Services
Most cooling failures trace back to a short list of usual suspects. A blown capacitor. Refrigerant that leaked out somewhere along the line set. A blower motor that finally seized. A condensate drain packed solid. A thermostat that quietly stopped talking to the rest of the system.
Five different problems. Five very different price tags. And from where you’re standing at the thermostat, they all look identical.

That’s the part worth paying attention to when you hire someone. We diagnose first, quote second, and you hear what failed and why before anybody starts pulling parts.
Give us a call if your system is:
- Blowing warm air, or never quite hitting the temperature you set
- Kicking on and off every few minutes
- Tripping the breaker
- Icing up on the indoor coil or the refrigerant line
- Leaking water near the air handler
- Grinding, screeching, or clicking
- Running nonstop and still losing ground
We work on central air, heat pumps, air handlers, and ductless equipment.
Central Air Installation and Replacement
A new central air system is only as good as the math behind it, and this is where a lot of installs go sideways.
Oversize the equipment and it cools the air fast, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off before it has pulled any real moisture out of the house. Technically 72 degrees. Feels like a basement. Undersize it and the thing runs all afternoon without ever catching up. Either way you’re replacing a compressor years early.
So every quote we write starts with an actual load calculation. Square footage, insulation, how much glass you have and which way it faces, what shape the ductwork is in. Not “the old one was a three-ton, let’s put in a three-ton.”
From there we walk you through the equipment. What the efficiency difference between two systems actually costs you month to month, in dollars, not in acronyms.
Every install includes hauling away the old equipment, new line set or a real inspection of the existing one, electrical connections, refrigerant charged to spec, and commissioning before we leave. That last one matters more than it sounds. We verify that the system is hitting its rated capacity while we’re still standing in your house, rather than you finding out in August. We also handle full HVAC installation when the furnace or air handler is getting swapped at the same time.
Signs Your AC Needs Replacing Instead of Repairing
Most central air systems last somewhere between twelve and eighteen years in this climate. What decides where yours lands isn’t the badge on the cabinet, it’s whether anybody ever cleaned the coils.
A few things push the conversation toward replacement:
The system runs R-22. Production has stopped, supply is limited, and topping off a leaky R-22 system has gotten expensive enough that it changes the math on its own.
You’ve paid for two or more repairs in one cooling season.
The compressor failed and the unit is past ten years.
Your cooling bills keep climbing while the thermostat setting hasn’t moved.
Rooms that used to hold temperature don’t anymore.
The rule we actually use: if the repair costs a meaningful chunk of a new system and you’re already past twelve years, you’re buying time, not a fix. Sometimes buying time is the right call, and if that’s your situation we’ll say so. Even when the repair is the smaller ticket for us.
Our commitment to rapid response and thorough service has earned us the trust of customers across urban, suburban, and rural communities throughout New Jersey.
AC Replacement Cost in New Jersey
What a replacement runs comes down to a handful of things:
- System size, set by the load calculation and not by whatever the old unit happened to be
- Efficiency rating, where a higher SEER2 system costs more up front and less every month after
- Ductwork condition, since leaky or undersized runs may need sealing or replacing
- Electrical, if the existing circuit or disconnect won’t carry the new equipment
- Scope, meaning condenser only versus the full system including the air handler
Every quote we hand you is itemized. Equipment, labor, and any extra work listed separately. Nothing buried in one number at the bottom.
Seasonal Maintenance and Tune-Ups

A spring tune-up is the cheapest thing you will ever do for a cooling system.
Two reasons. Dirty coils and a low refrigerant charge both force the compressor to work harder than it was built to, which is what quietly turns a fifteen year system into a nine year system. And a technician who catches a weak capacitor in April is a much smaller bill than the same capacitor failing during the first heat wave of August.
What we actually do on a cooling tune-up:
- Clean the condenser coil and clear debris out of the outdoor unit
- Inspect the evaporator coil for dirt and ice damage
- Check refrigerant charge against manufacturer spec
- Read the temperature split across the coil, which tells us whether the system is genuinely moving heat
- Check amp draw on the blower and condenser fan motors
- Test the capacitor under load, since it’s the single most common part failure we see
- Tighten and inspect electrical connections at the disconnect and contactor
- Clear the condensate drain and check the float switch
- Check the filter and replace it
- Confirm the thermostat is calibrated and cycling correctly
You get told what we found either way. Including when the answer is that everything looks fine.
